Belles Drop First Road MIAA Matchup

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Saint Mary's College Softball fell in their double header with Calvin University on Wednesday, 10-2 in game one and 3-1 in game two. The Belles fall to 9-15 (0-4 MIAA) while the Knights improve to 15-9 (3-1 MIAA).

Game One

Junior Allie Moss (Goshen, IN) got the game started with a leadoff single through the right side. After a steal and advancing on a wild pitch for Moss, sophomore Gia Schiavone (Poland, OH) doubled to left field to give Saint Mary's an early 1-0 lead.

While Calvin was held quiet in the first, they would answer with three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead, 3-1. The Belles answered back in the top of the third, after back-to-back lead off singles from freshman Molly Ryan (Joliet, IL) and Moss, sophomore Talia Jorgensen (St. Paul, MN) reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Ryan to third. Schiavone then hit a sacrifice fly into left field, allowing Ryan to come in to score.

Calvin bounced back with two runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead, 5-2. After a quiet fifth inning, the Knights put up a five spot in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Knights added five runs including a run-rule walk-off three run home run to end the game early.

Moss led the team with two hits in the first game while Schiavone drove in two runs and added a double. Three other Belles added hits while Moss and Ryan both came in to score once.

In the circle, sophomore Aubrey Zachary (Granger, IN) was the pitcher of record. Zachary threw five innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and striking out three batters. Sophomore Ashlyn Yeo (Jackson, MI) came in relief of Zachary in the sixth inning, throwing one-third inning, allowing three hits and five runs.

Game Two

The second game of the double-header was an old fashioned pitchers dual. The two starting pitchers took the game into the fifth inning before Saint Mary's was able to break the deadlock.

After a leadoff single from sophomore Hunter St. Peter (Traverse City, MI), sophomore Lydia Hinga (Portage, MI) reached on an error before Moss followed that up with a single of her own to load the bases. Jorgensen then reached on a sharp line ball back to the pitcher, reaching on the fielder's choice after Hinga was out at third and St. Peter was able to score to give the Belles a 1-0 lead.

Calvin responded with a run of their own in the top of the sixth to the game 1-1. The Knights then tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning before shutting the Belles down in their final at-bat to take the 3-1 win and series sweep.

St. Peter led the team with two hits in game two and scored the lone run for the Belles. Three other Belles added a hit while Schiavone added two walks.

In the circle, senior Sam Mikitka (Naperville, IL) threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on seven hits including five scoreless to start the game. Mikitka also added two strikeouts in the game.
