Belles fall to Thunder at Home

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Saint Mary's College Soccer fell to Trine University, 4-1, on Saturday. The Belles fall to 4-6-1 (1-3 MIAA) while the Thunder improve to 6-4-3 (3-1 MIAA).

Both teams pressed one another's defenses throughout the first half but struggled to finish shots. The two teams combined for 11 total shots in the first half while Trine had a 7-4 advantage. The Belles put up multiple strong efforts playing balls through the Thunder defense, but strong defense and good goalkeeping kept them off the board. Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Krayer (Hinsdale, IL) tallied four saves on four shots on target in the first half alone as the two teams went into the break knotted at zero.

Saint Mary's got the scoring going early in the second half, just over five minutes in as junior Kayla O'Neal (Carlsbad, CA) played a beautiful over the top through ball up to freshman Lily Larimer (Pittsford, NY) who found herself one on one with the Trine goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the back of the net, giving the Belles a 1-0 lead. The Thunder would control the rest of the second half as they tacked on the tying goal right away after the kickoff before taking the lead just four minutes later. Ten minutes later, Trine would add another goal to add to their lead before winning a penalty kick after a hard collision inside the Saint Mary's box, slotting the penalty to take a 4-1 lead and close the match out.

Larimer and sophomore Mia Johnson (Mission Viejo, CA) led the team with three shots each while the two and freshman Piper Thomas (Osceola, IN) added a shot on target each.

Krayer would finish with six saves on the afternoon. O'Neal and freshmen Chloe Knese (St. Louis, MO) and Isabella Knese (St. Louis, MO) all tallied 90 minutes of play in the field.
